What is Cremation?
Cremation is a specialized process by which your pet's remains are reduced by exposure to intense heat into very small bone fragments and a sandy ash. The ashes are odorless, sterile, weigh only a fraction of the pet's original weight, and can be safely stored indefinitely. You may choose to keep, scatter, or bury them.
Is cremation the same for animals as it is for people?
Yes. The process is exactly the same. In fact all of our equipment is the exactly the same type as used in the human cremation field. Our equipment is only used to cremate pets.
What is the cost of cremation?
The cost for cremation depends on a number of factors, including the weight of your pet and if you choose a private cremation with your pet's sole remains returned to you or communal cremation and the ashes are not returned. The cost can range from $50 - $300. We will be happy to quote you a price and fully explain the options.
Can I tour or be present for the cremation?
Yes, we have an open door policy and a comfortable waiting area, but we do ask that you call to schedule a visit us. We respect each client's privacy and we will schedule a time when you will have the full use and privacy of our facility.
How will my pet be returned to me?
Each pet that is cremated privately will be returned in a very attractive embroidered chest style box with no additional charge. The ashes will be secured in a plastic bag with the Pet Spirit ID™ identification tag and that will be placed inside a cotton muslin bag. We have a variety of specialty urns and will be happy to assist you if you choose an alternative.
Can Delaware Pet euthanize my pet at home?
No, but we work with the best mobile vets in the area. If your normal veterinarian is not able to make a house call, you may call us and we can help make the arrangements and coordinate to meet your needs.
What do I do if my Vet does not use your service but I want Delaware Pet to handle the transportation and cremation for me?
Simply tell your Vet that Delaware Pet Cremation will be handling the transportation and cremation arrangements and your pet should be held for us. Then give us a call at (302) 656-5737, we will immediately make arrangements to pick up your pet and the ashes will be returned to you within 48 hours. You may also use our pre planning service so that you will have the comfort of knowing in advance that your pet is in the best possible hands.
If my pet dies at home or in the middle of the night, what should I do? How much time do I have?
Normally at room temperature you have 36-72 hours before any major decomposition is noticeable. We recommend keeping your pet as cool as possible. We will transport your pet at a time that is convenient for you. If it is in the middle of the night you may call us and leave a message at any hour, we can be at your home that morning.
Can I bury my pet in my back yard?
You must first check with your local municipality. Many towns and cities have ordinances against pet burial in residential areas. Also consider that if you move, you may want to be able to take the ashes with you.
What if I do move and I've buried my pet, but I do not want to leave him/her?
We will be glad to cremate any remains that are in the ground, please call us prior to exhuming to let us know you will be dropping off buried remains to be cremated.
Can I bury the ashes?
Yes you can, burying and scattering are options. We suggest spending some quiet time to reflect on your pet's personality and what your needs may be. If you listen closely your pet will let you know what should be done.
What happens to my remains if I choose the communal option?
All of our communal remains are placed on a beautiful private farm in Landenberg Pennsylvania with a beautiful stone marker celebrating all of their lives.
