Gertrude Louise

There are dogs who come into our lives for years, and there are dogs who change us in just a matter of weeks.

Last night, our sweet #GertieLou crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Before Gertie came into rescue, she had spent her life being used over and over as a breeding dog. Her worth had been measured by what she could produce instead of who she was. By the time she found her way to us, her body carried the evidence of a life that had asked far too much of her.

But from the moment she came into my home, she was no longer a breeding dog.

She was safe.

She was cherished.

She was loved.

And somewhere along the way, she finally realized she was home.

She had just begun to protect her little kingdom. If someone came to the door, she'd let out the biggest, most ferocious Boxer howl you could imagine, proudly announcing that she had things under control. If she heard someone walking by outside, she'd give a little "woof" without even bothering to lift her head, just enough to let them know she was keeping watch.

She had claimed her home.

One of my favorite things was watching her with her deer friends. They would come to visit outside the apartment, and she would simply watch them. No barking. No chasing. No trying to scare them away. Just quiet curiosity, as if they understood one another.

She had the sweetest face, the biggest appetite, and a stubborn determination that made you believe she could overcome anything. Every day was spent trying to make her feel better, searching for answers, celebrating the good moments, and hoping for many more.

Sometimes love isn't measured by the number of years you have together. Sometimes it's measured by the promise you make to them: that they will never again wonder if they're wanted, hungry, hurting alone, or forgotten.

I wish we had been given more time.

Thank you, Gertrude Louise, for trusting me with your heart. Thank you for every snore, every tail wag, every slobbery kiss, every happy dance greeting after a long day, every happy meal, every howl at the front door, every hour of spoon cuddling and every peaceful moment spent watching the deer.

Your life did not begin with kindness, but it ended surrounded by it.

You left this world knowing what every dog deserves to know—that you mattered, that you were enough, and that you were loved beyond measure.

Now go find Foster Max at the Rainbow Bridge. I have a feeling he'll be waiting for you with a wagging tail, ready to show you all the best sunny spots, the softest grass, and where the treats are kept. Tell him we still miss him, too.

Run free now, beautiful girl. No more pain. No more tumors. No more being used. Just endless fields to run, butterflies to chase, deer to watch, and friends waiting to welcome you home.

Until we meet again, sweet girl.

You were so very loved.
